Common Name Purple Top Grass Variety
Regional Names
Botanical Name Tridens flavus
Description One of my favorite native grasses, purple top grass has a rich hue to its foliage as it developes each spring. In our display garden the foliage emerges amber then yellows a bit until it matures green. Shortly after the foliage matures, the flower spikes develop as purple panicles that bloom from August to November followed by purplish seed heads. It reaches 3-5'High x 3'Wide. It does well in about any condition, except wet sites. Best for partial shade landscapes. It is the host plant for the Crossline Skipper butterfly. Purple top grass can reseed freely, but do not worry it's a native.
