Botanical Name Chamaerops humilis
Description This silver form of the European Fan Palm, is more cold hardy than its green cousin. The Silver European Fan Palm is a slow growing species that naturally becomes multi-trunk with age. It can be kept as a single trunk specimen with proper pruning as the pix shows. Either way this variety cerifera with its silver fronds rewards its grower as a striking specimen in the landscape. It prefers well drained to dry conditions in full sun, but will tolerate shade. Native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco east in areas across north Africa and is found as high as 5000', where it endures snow, extreme cold, heavy dampness for vary short periods, and hot desert like conditions in full sun in summer. A very versatile species well suited for the states as long as it is kept dry. Its mature size is 10"High x 8-10'Wide in 20 years. This palm may have a bit of a slow grower, but it rewards the grower with the the most bluish/silver fronds on earth next to Palms Nannorrhops species var. 'Marzari silver' & 'Iran Silver', Brahea moorei and or Brahea decumbens.
Notes
PICTURED IS THE GREEN FORM! All of our 1 gallons are grown in a 4x4" square x 14" deep pots and 3 gallon are grown in 7x7" square x 18" deep pots to allow for a deeper root system which aids in our Palms winter survival. Customers are having much better success with our palms surviving the winter over growers that use traditional shallow pots.
