This large native of California, Arizona and into Mexico matures near 50'High fairly quickly compared to other species of palms. It is recognizable by the huge fat smooth trunk sometimes as wide as 3'. A rare Palm in nature, it grows well from seed and has a bright future as it is very highly sought by commercial establishments for it rate of growth and stature. American Cotton Palm, as it is sometimes called, it has been reported to handle 10-12 degrees F with little damage in the upper south. It may shead its fronds in colder winters, but the trunk sustains and new frond appear the next spring. It still like its brother needs to be kept dry. Mounting up, adding grave, sand, or rocks to the medium planting site all or any will aid in it chance of survival. Open air movment is an added requirment for both species of Washingtonia
