| Description |
Another recently described species that has an endangered status. Very cold hardy to 5 degrees F it should be placed in wind sheltered areas because it is considered not as wind tolerant. The Windamere Palm has a slender truck that developes rings with age. The fronds naturally shed with this species and it withstands regular snows as well as hard frost. The bare (hairless) trunk is quite robust supporting large thick leathery fronds that are perfect half circles and create a beautful silhouette. This species is very fast growing, equal to if not faster than species T. fortunei. 1+'per year of trunk growth has been reported. The 3 gallon and smaller sized plants need winter protection in areas of prolonged freezing their first year or so. Native to the Sikkim Province in the Himalayas, N.E. India where it grows on and around rocky slopes. A tough species and performs well in gardens. Native to the Sikkim Himalayas in north-east India and requires a rich, loamy but well drained soil.
